Alexa

Several webmasters and web site owners tend to promote installing the Alexa software so that regular visitors and patrons can help boost the visitation ratings of the web site. I have no issue with people who voluntarily and knowingly participate in such a process. However, the eager beaver promoters often fail to inform fully users that the Alexa software product essentially is spyware.

Web site ratings are determined by tracking the web sites visited and that is what the Alexa software does—tracks users. Every web site that a user visits while using the Alexa software is noted and the main Alexa web site receives this information. Of course, that means a user’s IP address could be sent too. That probably means little to many people, but remember that whether an IP address is static or dynamic, tracing that address back to a real person is a straightforward process. Thus, the idea should be disturbing to many people.

The Alex software is spyware. You are free to install the software, but be fully informed.
