Bigshot Words© Copyright Darrell Anderson. There are some words I dislike. Puffy, pompous words. Arrogant words. Assist: Two syllables. One will do: help. Desideratum: Gee, Beaver, why don’t you just say desire? Efficacious: Lawyers and college professors really love this one. Why not just write effective or efficient? Hegemony: Doesn’t influence or power sound less pompous? Utilize: Engineers love this one. Three syllables. One will do: use. The word I dislike the most: Methodology: The suffix “ology” means “the study of.” Thus, methodology means the study of methods. Yet, the word is almost always used instead of method or methodical. Go ahead, the next time you read the word methodology, mentally replace the word with method or methodical. You’ll see. Finis. |
