Firefox-GTK Again—Day 63

© Copyright Darrell Anderson.

Firefox-GTK is acting somewhat normally again—for now. That is, menus open more quickly and I noticed no sluggishnesss during a 2 hour surfing session. Some of the other quirks remain, but I am unsure what I have changed to notice the recent difference. I recall disabling memory caching and I also configured Session Saver to save only for crashes. I am unsure if the modifications explain the difference.

I wrote earlier that sometimes pages do not load. I suspect this is a DNS or caching problem. I rule out the IPTables firewall or my ISP because the same domain name loads immediately in Konqueror. I never have had this problem in Windows.

Thus, I am going to reenable the memory cache but at a fixed size (not dynamic), disable the disk cache, and limit history to one day. I will make the same changes in Windows. Painful on dial-up, but we’ll see what happens.

One recent change is disabling the Extended Statusbar extension. Although not always accurate, this extension helps me with my dial-up connection. However, lately I have been noticing some quirky things:

  1. The status bar not returning to normal when a page is finished loading.
  2. The progress bar sometimes remaining in a mid-progress condition despite the page being loaded.
  3. The browser title bar not changing text when I change tabs.

I can’t say any of these quirks developed recently. I only say I have noticed them recently—they might have been happening for a while but I never paid much mind until all of these quirky things piled high. However, after disabling this extension I notice the first three problems went away. Sigh. I liked this helpful additive for my dial-up connection.

Finis.
