First Steps

The first thing Windows users will want to do is perform a comprehensive evaluation and assessment of how they use their computers. This process takes a while. Although there are some tasks that users perform daily, there are other tasks they perform only occasionally. Therefore, listing such tasks is not an intuitive exercise until actually performing that task.

I kept a piece of paper near me when I worked at my computer. I wrote notes as I noticed tasks. I also browsed through my hard drive looking at all the software I had installed. Don’t forget to list seemingly trivial administrative tasks too, like backups and system monitoring. I also looked at various batch files I had written. There also was the daunting task of converting application software macros and templates, such as those used with MS Word. I then transferred those notes into and maintained a two column Word document. In the left column was the task I performed in Windows, in the second column were hopeful Linux solutions.
