Konqueror© Copyright Darrell Anderson. I have learned to detest the KDE Konqueror as a file manager. I like the old Windows model of a directory pane and a file pane. In fact, after migrating from WFWG 3.11 to NT4, I missed the older 3.x File Manager—for quite some time; but I cannot seem to adapt to the way Konqueror does things in one pane. There is a “side bar” option, but that option does not work like the old File Explorer does. So I need to research options there. The single window problems seem to have disappeared with version KDE 3.x. Konqueror now provides, or possibly I finally figured out how to create a tree pane on the left side of the program. I also dislike the integration of providing an all-in-one tool to look at file management, viewing files, and surfing the net. While in file management mode, if I select an HTML file, Konqueror simply morphs into browser mode. This is confusing to me because I am essentially a single tasking kind of guy. I like tools that do one thing and does that one thing well. I want a file manager that does not think it is a browser and a browser that does not think it is a file manager. I make no apologies, that is how I like to work. I purposely stayed away from Windows 2000 (W2K) because of the same integrated approach. In fact, the continuing tradition in the Unix/Linux world is one tool-one purpose, but do that one purpose well. Why does Konqueror ignore that approach? Please split the tool into two tools, one for file browsing and one for internet browsing. Under both KDE 2.2 (Lycoris) and KDE 3.x (Mandrake) I cannot get Konqueror configured the way my mind works. Profiles refuse to remember windows positions, and right-clicking on the title of a window to select “Store Settings” does not remember window positions either. Konqueror is creating a love-hate relationship because I see much potential for Konqueror, but not remembering the window position is greatly irritating to me. When I finally get KDE 3.1 installed I would like to try Konqueror for browsing because tabbed windows are now available. I have been using the tabbed windows MDI (multiple document interface) with the cantankerous Opera for a long time now and cannot envision going back to the SDI (single document interface). Indeed, one major reason why I never updated Word 97 was that M$ abandoned the MDI. Please, somebody, tell me how to make Konqueror remember window positions so I can like this thing! Finis. |
