Many new Slackware users eventually ask about the mysterious quotations and sayings that appear when logging in from the command line. The simple answer is that they are a part of the BSD games package and the program responsible for displaying those messages is called Fortune. For a while they are funny and cute to read, but eventually they seem to be a nuisance to many people. They are easily disabled without uninstalling any packages. From the command line or a file manager, locate the /etc/profile.d directory. Disable the executable bit on the following scripts: bsd-games-login-fortune.sh Caveat: Do not remove the Fortune package if using Xfce. The Xfce Tricks and Tips applet uses the Fortune display engine. Finis. |
